This week in Kpop: GOT7, G-DRAGON, Taeyang, Jennie, Lisa, CNBLUE, CIX

Welcome to a new weekly series where I share exciting / interesting things that happened in Kpop. I’ve noticed, oftentimes, negativity spreads faster than the positive things. Therefore my goal for this weekly series is to spread positivity and bring joy back in Kpop. Whether it’s breaking news, a comeback, concert, I want to share with you what I enjoyed and I hope you also share something in Kpop that made your day a little better too.

So grab a drink or a snack and let’s begin.

GOT7 is a rare group in the music industry

On Monday, January 20, GOT7 made their triumphant return. The group has been actively promoting this album with lots of content, including music show performances. It made me so happy seeing all seven members together again. Their mini album “WINTER HEPTAGON” has nine tracks each one showcasing the members unique music styles. Of course their title track “Python” has been on replay…literally every single day it’s on repeat for me. The choreography is clever, the lyrics are memorable, and overall I give it a 10/10.

There’s not many groups that have maintained their original lineup since debut. Plus a group that all the members are signed to different labels. YET, they still come together to release music. That is a rare thing to see in the music industry.

Think about it, how many groups out there are still together while being under different labels?

I am immensely proud of all the members and I’m grateful to their companies and JayB for making this comeback happen.

Good Boy(s) G-DRAGON and Taeyang bring back Kpop golden era

Yes, you heard that right, G-DRAGON and Taeyang performed together on stage again. During the 2025 Gala des Pièces Jaunes in Paris, France, the dynamic duo performed their hit song and my absolute favorite “Good Boy”. The cheers from the crowd was electrifying and I wish I could’ve been there to witness it. Along with “Good Boy” they performed “Home Sweet Home” and GD also performed “Power”.

Something I love and have always found fascinating is the distinct style between GD and Taeyang. They are both very different but are a powerful duo. Their stage presence is insane and I’ll never get tired of watching their performances.

In other news, G-DRAGON announced his variety show coming to Disney+ called “Good Day”, where he’ll interview other celebs. It premieres on February 16. From what I’ve seen in the teasers it looks like it’ll be a treat. One last thing to note, GD’s Vogue issue. I have one word…wow.

Blinks are in for treat

Speaking of a treat, Jennie announced the release of her first solo album “Ruby”! You heard that right, solo album. It will be released on March 7 with 15 songs including her single “Mantra”. The album will feature several artists including Childish Gambino, Doechii, Dominic Fike, Dua Lipa, FKJ, and Kali Uchis.

The week before Jennie’s solo album, on February 28, her bandmate Lisa will release her first solo album “Alter Ego”. It’ll have the songs “Rockstar”, “New Woman”, and “Moonlight Floor”. Each song represents a different persona.

And starting the BLACKPINK solo return this year is Jisoo! She will also release new music on February 14! Her company released an image with the words “amor” and “montage”. So far we don’t know much about it but it seems intriguing.

No doubt all three comebacks will be distinctly different and I look forward to hearing their new music.

CNBLUE aka my favorite band is coming to North America

I couldn’t believe it myself. When I saw the announcement this morning I had to read and re-read it again. CNBLUE, my favorite band, announced they are coming to North America. I discovered CNBLUE in 2020, and instantly fell in love with their concert videos. Ever since then it became a dream of mine to see them perform live. Almost five years later my dream is coming true. I never thought they would come to the U.S., mostly because they always tour in Asia. I’ve often said if I travel to Asia I would make sure it would coincide with a CNBLUE concert. But now they’re coming to North America and it feels surreal.

Anyway, I am still in shock but I am beyond excited.

Here’s their tour schedule:

  • April 16, Toronto
  • April 18, New York
  • April 24, Los Angeles
  • April 27, San Francisco

I’ll make sure to keep you all updated on the tour information (venue, ticket sale date, etc). Updates will mostly be on my twitter (@ elimariereacts).

CIX deserves all the recognition with their comeback

This week, CIX had their comeback on Wednesday. Their title track “Thunder”  is an upbeat synth pop track with an addictive hook. The background vocal harmonization is the hidden gem in the song. It is *chef’s kiss*.

The music video shows the members being shocked with lightning and having some sort of superpowers. It perfectly showcases the concept of the song. Although this is their first comeback without Bae Jinyoung (he left C9 Entertainment) the four members did a great job.

Watch CIX music video for “Thunder” here.

Their mini album “Thunder Fever” features five songs including two tracks that were previously released in 2024, “Lovers or Enemies” and “My name is shadow”. The last song on the mini album is “My Everlasting Sun”, it’s a slower ballad with exquisite vocals from the members. The song has a fantastical sound with strings, piano, and beautifully layered harmonizing vocals.

Overall I highly recommend checking out CIX’s comeback.

That is all for this week. Thank you for taking your time to read my little Kpop weekly news segment. Let me know what is something that happened in Kpop this week that brightened your day?
