In the final episode of the competition show Road To Kingdom, Pentagon released the song “Basquiat” followed by a powerful performance.
The song itself is a masterpiece. It was composed and written by Hui and Wooseok. The vocals convey the raw emotions of the members that sound like a desperate battle cry. The strong message resonates with the current problems seen in the world today. The song is for anyone who has felt oppressed or trapped and want to break free and forge their own path in life. I can’t help but look at the world around us and think how perfectly timed this song is.
Pentagon released an official performance video which seems to take place in a war zone. The guys are tied up and throughout the song the choreography showcases the struggle to break free. There are many elements in the dance that require a lot of strength and energy. I can imagine how physically draining it is. During their performance on Road To Kingdom they pulled off the whole choreography effortlessly while singing, rapping, and acting out the emotions of the song.

Here’s a rough English translation of the song:
I wanna hear your voice (4x)
A waving flag
Look at my, Look at my cheeze
With my eyes wide open, I cry out Louder
Wings of freedom across the land One shot
Oh do or die
Left right Keep pace, screams echoing through the earth and sky
In chains, crying out silent tears
All the sorrow inside, black darkness
Fly away as ashes
I’m the new Basquiat, who dares to look down on me
Meaningless crown, see the light Put it down
Brilliant The view of mother nature
GOD bless you
To find the answer, fly away Sky high
I wanna hear your voice (3x)
I’m the new Basquiat
We never die yeah
With a single seed I bloomed a flower
A dungeon called the world, I throw myself into it
Spent too many nights wide awake (Breathe)
In chains, crying out silent tears
All the sorrow inside and deep agony
Fly away as ashes
I’m the new Basquiat, who dares to look down on me
Meaningless crown, see the light Put it down
Brilliant The view of mother nature
GOD bless you
To find the answer, fly away Sky high
I wanna hear your voice (3x)
I’m the new Basquiat
To the vulgarness of this generation
Submitting to it, I can take it I’m fine with it
So many groans The way of gimmicks
And your indifference is what makes me go crazy
Look at us endlessly survive
The moment when things that don’t shine start shining
I dream and I turn on the light, lights on
We’ll be a new Basquiat
To find the answer, fly away Sky high
I wanna hear your voice (3x) I’m the new Basquiat
Basquiat was an artist who had his own style, he expressed his views about society and injustices through his art.
In this song, just like Basquiat, Pentagon wants to forge their own path. They want to break away from the boundaries placed on them.
If you know Pentagon’s story as a group this song is all the more inspiring. Pentagon has certainly experienced hard times. Despite the hardships they face, they continue pushing forward connecting with people through their music and creating art by their standards.
It’s evident each member put so much of themselves into this.
I firmly believe “Basquiat” is an anthem and I highly recommend you (whoever is reading this) to please check out more of Pentagon’s music. This is a group that composes, choreographs, and truly put their all into their music.
